- Open Source in Port Authorities: Geospatial Solutions for the Optimization of Port and River Operations Published: CAPSI 2025 · 2025
Port authorities face challenges in implementing geospatial solutions due to reliance on expensive proprietary software and the limited flexibility of outsourced solutions, delaying the digitalization of ports. This study demonstrates how to develop efficient, low-cost geospatial solutions using Open-Source technologies and in-house technical teams. The proposed approach enables geospatial control of port operations while complying with national and European directives on free software. The case study of APDL presents a practical methodology that produces solutions that meet technical and regulatory requirements, offer reliability comparable to commercial solutions, and adapt to the needs of port and river management.

This paper presents a PhD thesis proposal in Informatics Engineering, part of Spatio-Temporal Information Systems, with applicability in technological communication tools and visual representation of knowledge for Digital Media. It is intended to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of heterogeneous, multivariate, multidimensional information produced and shared by different sources in different formats.

This work presents an innovative platform based on various modules that allows effective control and efficient management of operations, processes and requirements associated with any sea port. The developed modules support activities in Heritage, Hydrography, Port Traffic, Dominial, Studies and Works, Safety and Environment. Most modules were pioneers in integration with business process management of Portuguese ports of Leixões and Viana do Castelo.
- The Fifth Empire: The reinterpretation of Portuguese and European history in an action adventure game Published: CISTI 2014 · Jun 2014
A single-player action adventure game in 2D centering around an adaptation of the Fifth Empire myth. The main goal is the development of an attractive videogame with a strong educational purpose, taking place in a real and historical setting. Through entertainment, the game promotes curiosity about Portuguese history and motivates detailed study by the target audience.

This ongoing work proposes the implementation of a regional spatial data infrastructure based on free software, in compliance with the principles of the EU INSPIRE Directive and OGC standards. Different spatial data infrastructures developed at different hierarchical levels can coexist and communicate in an interoperable way, constituting a spatial basis of reference that facilitates integration with other sectorial applications.

This paper presents the creation of a highly scalable and modular platform providing new services to advertising and marketing for the catering industry, taking advantage of spatial context and user preferences, benefiting from the advantages of Mobile Advertising and Mobile Augmented Reality.

This paper presents a Unity3D based framework for developing immersive augmented reality solutions and 360° panoramas. The solution allows aggregation of spatial information from disparate and heterogeneous sources, comprising visualization of POIs, image overlays, 3D objects and navigation between panoramas. Features a strong multiplatform (web and mobile) component with easily pluggable functional modules.
