Web maps for ports
I build the web maps and software that port authorities use to see what is happening in the port, plan it and react to it. I do it at APDL, the port authority of Leixões, Douro and Viana do Castelo, and before that for 11 years at 3Maps, building GIS platforms for ports and municipalities.
What I build
- Live vessel tracking. Ships on a map in real time, decoded from AIS antennas, with historical playback.
- Berthing and maneuver planning. Vessel calls, berths, mooring bitts, tides and checklists in one place, shared by pilots, tugs and terminals.
- Incident management. Occurrences, aids to navigation (buoyage), navigation channels, bridges and emergency ramps on an interactive map.
- Pilotage and fleet operations. Pilot passage plans and the follow-up of pilotage, mooring and towage manoeuvres.
- Weather and sea conditions. Sensors, forecasts and tides for safe port operations.
- Self-hosted maps. Our own vector and raster tile servers, so map data stays in-house.

How I build
Mostly with open-source tools: MapLibre GL JS for the maps, PostgreSQL with PostGIS for spatial data, and Laravel with Vue for the applications. I try to keep things small and simple: low-cost solutions that port teams can run and maintain themselves. I wrote about that approach in a paper on open source in port authorities.
Open source
I also publish small open-source tools for MapLibre: SVG polygon patterns and label callouts, and I write about self-hosted map tiles.
